Small Sources, Wide Waters: Writing Stories from the Gulf

This course explores the Arabian Gulf as part of a wider Indian Ocean world, tracing histories of movement, trade, and connection across regions including South Asia, East Africa, and Arabia. Through archival fragments and everyday objects—such as photographs, letters, and documents—participants examine how lives have been shaped by the sea. Combining lectures, source analysis, mapping, and writing, the course teaches how to critically read historical materials and develop a source-based micro-history, moving from small traces to broader themes of labour, empire, migration, and memory.
